Puma - a big player in sportswear

When we think of vintage sportswear, we automatically think of the most well-known brands such as Nike , Adidas or Champion . As the fourth largest sporting goods manufacturer in the world, Puma is also one of the best-known and most established sports brands and tells a long, traditional story. It all started with sports shoes, today they sell a wide range of sports and casual wear for women, men and children. Let's jump into the history of Puma...

From Herzogenaurach directed by Rihanna and Jay-Z

In 1924 the Dassler brothers founded the "Sportshoe Factory Gebrüder Dassler" in Herzogenaurach. After some conflict, each of the siblings continued to run their own company - while his brother founded Adidas, Rudolf stayed with his company, which was initially called "Ruda" because of its name, but was then changed to "Puma", a name with nobler connotations since this was his youth nickname. In 1949, Rudolf Dassler entered his company in the commercial register. In 1948 the first football shoe model "Atom" was introduced. The "Super Atom" was the evolution of the screw-in cleat shoe with the help of many football experts. In 1957, Rudolf patented the brand and for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, all Puma shoe models were equipped with the side-swept logo. The leaping cougar corporate logo was finally designed in 1968. In the same year, the brand's characteristic basketball shoe "Suede" was designed, which is still in production today. In addition to sports shoes, the product portfolio was expanded and from now on sports clothing is also produced. The situation between the brothers became more tense and there was an ever-increasing rivalry between Puma and Adidas.

After a crisis in 1990, the brand had to be realigned in terms of marketing. For example, some cooperations were entered into and thus Puma also became an official sponsor of the NFL in 1999. Under the new slogan "Forever Faster", Puma wants to become "the fastest sports brand in the world" with a particular focus on football, running and golf. As part of the realignment, Puma discontinued the production of sports clothing for the sports of sailing and rugby. Since the collaboration with Rihanna in 2015, there is also the somewhat higher-priced, more exclusive "Fenty" collection for women in addition to the usual Puma sportswear. After 20 years, Puma is also making basketball shoes again and carries the "Puma Basketball" collection with Jay-Z as creative director.
